Kinetik.care — usability, functionality, and style all in one package
About the project
Kinetik is a unique and innovative company that has developed a tech platform specifically for the non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) sector. The platform aims to connect patients, transportation carriers, and care providers, facilitating the organization, monitoring, and management of all NEMT-related matters.
Services we provided:
Results in numbers
By 2022, the company raised over 20 million dollars, integrated over 3500 transportation providers into its platform, and won the spot in CB Insights’ Top 150 Digital Health list as one of the most promising digital health startups in the world.

Assisting with developing the Kinetik app to enable digital coordination between stakeholders.
Creating a detailed analytics dashboard to provide deep insights into how transportation services work.
Designing a user-centered interface for improved service accessibility.
The NEMT industry is marked by a fragmented market structure, where the use of outdated and incompatible technologies by various stakeholders results in inefficiencies and poor coordination. These issues are further compounded by excessive reliance on manual and labor-intensive processes, which can lead to missed appointments and a lack of emphasis on service quality by transportation providers.
Kinetik sought to address these issues by designing a platform that would consider the needs of all users and develop specific products for patients, brokers, and transportation companies.
Application of technologies
The application of advanced technologies played a critical role in the development of Kinetik. Our team utilized a combination of React, Redux, and Google Maps API to create a seamless user experience and ensure real-time tracking capabilities.
Mui and React
Our combined team leveraged several popular front-end technologies to develop the Trip Scheduler tool, including Material-UI (Mui), React and styled-components, which are widely used in the industry for building user interfaces.
Material-UI allowed us to create a visually pleasing design that is consistent and easy to use, while React and styled-components enabled us to build reusable and composable components that can be effortlessly scaled and maintained.
Redux and Redux-saga
To handle data management, we employed Redux and Redux-saga. The Redux library helps us manage the state of the application in a centralized and predictable manner, while Redux-saga enables us to manage and test side-effects such as data fetching and backend communication.
The combination of these libraries has allowed us to create a robust and maintainable front-end that is capable of handling large amounts of data and state changes.
Google Maps integration
To ensure the accuracy and timeliness of the platform’s information for users as well as real-time tracking of each vehicle’s journey, we integrated Google Maps into the Trip Scheduler tool. This feature is especially important for NEMT services where up-to-date and accurate information is crucial.
Finally, we used the Luxon library to handle date and time formatting. Luxon provides a powerful and easy-to-use API for working with dates and times, which is essential for accurately scheduling trips and ensuring timely transportation for patients.
Over the course of this extensive project, our specialists have created more than 210 application screens, ensuring the product is comprehensive, efficient, and user-friendly. We have focused on creating an intuitive user interface that would improve the overall experience for people interacting with the product. The Halo Lab team has put a lot of effort into testing and iterating on the design to guarantee the final result meets the expectations of our client and their end-users. This thorough approach to developing key components such as Trip Assistant, Revenue Management System, and Trip Scheduler contributes to making Kinetik a strong and complete platform for NEMT services.
The key aspect of the development process for the Kinetik platform was focusing on user flow. Our team placed a strong emphasis on understanding the needs and goals of the different user groups. We employed this understanding to create a user flow that guides users through the various tasks and actions they need to perform while ensuring that the UI is intuitive and practical.
To achieve the project’s goals, our team utilized a design system — a set of design guidelines, components, and patterns that we developed and used consistently throughout the project. This allowed us to create a cohesive and consistent experience for users, while also reducing the development time by reusing common elements across different screens and features.
Assistance with product development
The client requested our assistance with key components that enable the Kinetik platform to fulfill its primary goal. As part of this arrangement, our own specialists were helping the client’s in-house team to design and develop three interlinked vital components.
The Kinetik platform relies heavily on a powerful tool called Trip Scheduler. Through it, users can create and manage itineraries for future trips, specify the required vehicle accommodations, as well as enter and retrieve patient data on demand. This tool is an essential part of the Kinetik platform, helping to streamline the scheduling process and ensure that patients can get the transportation they need, when they need it.
Kinetik’s Trip Assistant is designed to enhance the efficiency and reliability of non-emergency medical transportation services. By leveraging the platform, care managers can easily request rides, track the real-time location of drivers, and monitor on-time performance.
This helps to eliminate common issues such as long wait times, missed or late pickups, and other disruptions to patients’ travel plans. The ultimate goal of the Trip Assistant is to provide a seamless and stress-free experience for all parties involved.
Revenue Management System
In addition to the Trip Scheduler and Trip Assistant, Kinetik also offers a Revenue Management System which automates billing for NEMT services. This system is an essential tool for transportation providers, as it enables them to streamline their billing and payment processes, saving time and resources.
The system offers convenient claims management with real-time status updates and is designed to support the electronic exchange of travel data and instant payments.
Designing a user-friendly site
As per the client’s request, we also designed Kinetik’s site with user experience in mind, featuring a minimalist and stylish aesthetic. The signature animated “connectivity lines” with dots symbolizing drivers on the roads are paired with harmonizing fonts to convey the accessibility of the product. To better demonstrate the interior functionality and ease of use, we also included animations with sequences of actions. All these elements and refined gradients looked the best on a dark background, which the client ultimately chose for the final design.
Additionally, the client requested us to carefully craft Kinetik’s brand identity to convey a sophisticated and understated image. So our designers used fresh blue and menthol gradients to create associations with healthcare and innovation, and clean fonts to convey a technological and forward-thinking feel. Through this approach, we were able to effectively address the client’s vision and the demands of the industry. To ensure the product’s success, Halo Lab also provided the client with a comprehensive set of materials, including pitch decks, social media content, presentations, and a brandbook.
The Kinetik platform is a comprehensive and effective solution for the NEMT industry. The combination of the Trip Assistant, Revenue Management System, and Trip Scheduler make Kinetik a powerful mechanism for NEMT services, and the platform’s success is demonstrated by its integration with over 3,500 transportation providers so far.
Overall, Kinetik’s functional tools, supported by an intelligent interface and strong branding and design, make it a valuable resource for improving the accessibility and quality of NEMT-related services.
The team is always on the same page with us allowing us to both be successful. The client has learned to trust Halo Lab, thanks to their significant knowledge in UI/UX design. The vendor has provided valuable feedback by always being readily available for communication.
